Alphega Pharmacy UK members triumphant at this year's Pharmacy Business Awards

Six Alphega Pharmacy UK members won awards at the Pharmacy Business Awards 2017, which recognised the best pharmacists and pharmacy teams across the UK.

An impressive 50 per cent of the available awards for pharmacy on the evening went to Alphega Pharmacy UK members, who won in the Pharmacy Business of the Year Award, Public Health Pharmacist Award, Health and Beauty Pharmacy Award, Pharmacy Business Customer Care Award, Pharmacy Assistant Award and Pharmacy Team Award categories.

Public Health Pharmacist Award - Bina Patel, Kalsons Chemist

Kalsons Chemist was named winner of the Public Health Pharmacist Award, recognising the tireless work of owner Bina Patel, to enhance the health and wellbeing of the local community.

The pharmacy has achieved Healthy Living Pharmacy status and, since the closure of a local surgery, it has become the healthcare hub for the local community.

Bina and her team participate in community events, including going out to football stadiums to promote men's health issues and offer free blood pressure checks.

The pharmacy provides a host of commissioned services, including a specialist dermatology clinic which Bina developed after being approached by a local dermatology clinic that was struggling to prescribe.

Award winner Bina says: "It's inspiring to be recognised for what you do, not that I do it for the recognition; I do it for the wellbeing of the community and my business."

Pharmacy Business of the Year Award - Bernadette Brown, Cadham Pharmacy

The judges described Bernadette Brown as an "utterly inspirational pharmacist" and Cadham Pharmacy as the "future of pharmacy".

Since Bernadette acquired the pharmacy four years ago, it has evolved into a true Health Centre, putting patient care at the very heart of everything it does. The pharmacy has also seen both patient numbers and turnover grow rapidly over the last few years, despite strong competition from seven pharmacies in the area.

Following a successful funding bid from the Prescription for Excellence Fund, Bernadette was able to install a dispensing robot, refit the pharmacy and run NHS clinics to triage patients to the local surgery.

The dispensing robot has completely changed how the public access pharmacy services. No longer is OTC stock on the shelves. Instead, patients are directed to interact with virtual screens to select their products before going to the till point for collection. This enables a dedicated team to hold conversations with every customer about their purchases.

consultation rooms to deliver a travel clinic and health and beauty services, such as botox and private dermatology clinics.

Health and Beauty Pharmacy Award - Hodgson Pharmacy, Amish Patel

Amish Patel, and his Hodgson Pharmacy, won the judges over with their foray into medical aesthetics, which has proved incredibly successful. Once Amish achieves his independent prescriber qualification, botox patients will no longer need to attend the GP consultation that is currently required.

To help promote his pharmacy, Amish has embraced social media and now has patients coming to his pharmacy from all over London.

Pharmacy Team Award - Reid's Pharmacy, Edmonton, Terry Reid

Terry Reid and his team certainly wowed the judges as they were described as "a brilliant team who go the extra mile for their patients".

Terry is incredibly passionate about pharmacy and developing his team. With that ethos, it's no surprise that Reid's Pharmacy has achieved the Gold Standard Investors in People award twice – in 2013 and 2017; a feat that few community pharmacies have achieved.

Pharmacy Assistant Award - Reid's Pharmacy, Elena Falcone

Riding on the success of the Pharmacy Team Award, Reid's Pharmacy team member Elena Falcone took home the Pharmacy Assistant Award.

Elena is described as the ‘go-to' person in her pharmacy. But at the heart of her work is the patient - and it's not uncommon for her to deliver medicines to the elderly to check on their wellbeing. Her interventions to help patients over the years have often led to emergency GP appointments or a stay in hospital.

Elena cares deeply about her role, community pharmacy and her patients, who often ask for her by name. She's known to come in on her days off to help with urgent delivery of medicines.

Warman-Freed Pharmacy - Pharmacy Business Customer Care Award, Farah Ali

Warman-Freed Pharmacy beat off the competition to win the Pharmacy Business Customer Care Award.

The judging panel was impressed with the results of a recent refit and how the pharmacy has been transformed into a modern wellbeing centre, with immaculately merchandised health and beauty, OTC and natural healthcare displays.

Since the refit the pharmacy has seen sales of OTC, health and beauty and natural healthcare rise to just under 60 per cent of its turnover. The pharmacy is now a destination shop for these products and the staff's expert knowledge ensures customer needs are satisfied.

Sue Moore, General Manager of Health and Beauty and Alphega Pharmacy UK, said: "I feel incredibly proud of these winners. They have shown tremendous leadership, and demonstrated a remarkable passion for their business and their teams."
