Class 4 Drug Alert (Caution in use): NuTRIflex Lipid

B.Braun Medical Ltd is issuing advice to filter several batches of the above products due to the possible presence of particulates. A full list of the affected batches can be found on the MHRA website below. We understand that replacement stock is not available over the holiday period and switching to alternative products is not always straightforward.

Users are being advised by B.Braun Medical Ltd to use in-line filtration with a 1.2 micron filter containing a membrane that is both bacteria/particulate-retentive and air-eliminating when infusing any of the listed batches of the above NuTRIflex Lipid products. We understand this is in accordance with standard guidelines from the Royal College of Nursing and should not result in any problems during administration.

If users are concerned about filter selection or do not have local supplies available they should contact B.Braun Customer Services on 0114 225 9000 for advice. We understand they a reasonable number of filters in stock which they will issue without charge where there is a genuine need.  They expect further filters to be in stock next week but recipients are requested  to use this service sparingly.

We expect to issue further advice on this issue early in 2012 when supplies of unaffected stock, not needing filtration, are available in sufficient quantities.

Recipients of this Drug Alert should bring it to the attention of relevant contacts by copy of this letter. Primary care trusts are asked to forward this letter with the two appendices to relevant clinics, but not general practitioners and community pharmacists.
